Importance of moths
Although moths may not appear to have a great impact on society, they play many indirect roles in the ecosystem. For example, moths pollinate numerous plants. Pollination is the transfer of pollen from the anther to the stigma, and without the assistance of moths and other insects, the $15 billion pollination industry in the US would be nowhere near what it is today. Besides pollination, moths also assist us in that they are an indicator species. Because of their ubiquity and versatility, assessing the population of moths can describe the overall health of its particular ecosystem.
Moth symbolism in native american cultureMoths are especially important to Native American tradition, as they were revered and used in many rituals. Some viewed moths as a sign of death and the harbinger of death. The black witch moth was especially feared for its power to cause death to sick people within its radius. Moths were seen as the opposite as their counterpart, butterflies, for their nocturnal tendencies. One particular Native American myth likened moths to dead human souls wandering at night searching for life, due to the nature of moths being attracted to light.
